Coppers Journey

Copper the orphan Barmah Brumby Colt 2017

Picture
December 7th 2017 saw a trip to Barmah to find a little orphaned foal that had been observed on his own for 3 days, The wonderful locals keep such a great eye on the Brumbies to ensure their well being and safety, After keeping an eye on Copper over the 3 days hoping the mob would return it would become apparent he was well and truly on his own so the decision was made to return with a float an old standardbred gelding to see if the little fellow was missing companionship, it was amazing to watch how quickly he responded to the whinnies from the old boy and it wasnt long before he followed to the awaiting float and the trip back to the Sanctuary in Berrigan.
The first 24 hours were very tiring with 2 hourly feeds and encouraging him to drink the formula, he was very fussy and had a good apetitie for hay and water  not really how a little man should survive so it was decided a trip to GVEH was in order to have his bloods checked and his injuries looked at , he was like a patchwork quilt with hair falling out and missing all over his legs and body, he weighed in at just 64 kilos and was prescribed Antibiotics and pain meds as he was in quite a bit of discomfort, all had a guess that he was about two weeks of age and as he was monitored for three days it was well known he had not had any milk from mum, So the journey began.

Week 13

Hi everyone, Sorry its been a while but ive been busy,  So fat man is finally feeling the results of concentration camp and me, He has been running lots lately, Im growing like a weed so they say and really getting into trouble , they have no sense of humor,, I am nearly 3.5 months old and grown taller and my coat is glossy and i feel great, I over heard them talk about loosing my manly bits not to far away! Im not sure whether i agree with that idea.
I still drink tons of milk and im eating hard feed and hay, sometimes they are a bit slow bringing room service, But what can you expect with volunteers. Till we chat next time enjoy some pictures of Milo and I

Week 8

Hey everyone , well I've been here now 8 weeks and I must say they hired help here are questionable ! they have ropes up to block my path, Chase me when Im fixing the washing, and continuously yell at me I just yawn at them and show em how boring they are. Fat man is till fat and i try to keep his exercise regime in tact as you can see by the photos hes like a sloth. I am much taller now and have a little bit of the old fat happening as well so I'm trying to exercise regularly. Myself ! i think I am pretty amazing and handsome . I dont have much else to tell you,  Oh! wait I am in a big boys yard at night now and have my last milk at 10 pm cause Im eating lots of hay and hard feed,  PS Hahahah hang your washing properly Lilliana and I wont have to adjust it

Week 7

Its been a while since i have had a chance to chat to you all, Im going great guns, and really showing all these humans and horses i am the boss, Im drinking 14 plus litres a day of formula so if you want to pitch in i would be happy, Fat man Milo is now out and about and following the training program i have him on, You would not believe i have been moved from the back yard to a the holding yards which isnt to bad fat man sleeps in the yard beside cause he eats everything and drinks my milk, but we can talk through the fence overnight, I am tall and weigh in at close to 100 kilos,  my coat is new and shining and the fluff is slowly disappearing, I have had some great people visit and watched Fat man get his feet trimmed, i dont mind Emma but she said to me ( you better watch closely cause im doing you next time) what the hell do we wildies play these human games,? ill have to think about that one. any way i have things to get into so ill call in and chat in a few weeks, Ive added some pics for you all to drool over my beauty,

Week 4
My Little friend Milo is in lock up apparently his weight was at a stage he has something called founder so hes in the hospital ward getting treatment and im on the outside, Milo is much better and not really enjoying himself but a few more days and we can get back to our fitness program. I have had my first delousing and bath  and i learnt what being brushed is and having my feet attended, I am now drinking 2 litres per feed so about 14 litres a day and gaining weight and growing well, I wanted to thank you all for helping me through my youth and giving me the best chance under the circumstances.  As I cant play with the fat man this morning i got given a ball, I think these humans think im a dog !!! but anyhow i thought id would have a play, its actually fun! I hope they dont throw me a bone next.

Week 3
Well im growing and now drinking over a litre of formula each feed my legs have healed and although i still look like a patch work quilt im looking well and enjoying life, This week Mummy Lyn surprised me with a new friend called Milo PS {god hes fat} but hes a great mate and after me teaching him im boss things are moving along nicely.
Week 2
My legs are starting to heal well and i have finished my course of Antibiotics. Im now drinking over 500 mils of formula and consuming hay and some special hard feed , The girls found me a surrogate mummy but she and i both had other ideas, to be honest she was a cranky old girl glad they didnt make me stay with her. Mummy Lyn said she will find me a friend soon so i have company my own size, Im still growing ahead and getting used to life here, i like getting into things i shouldnt be in and have learnt if i head but the shed door i can get into lots of things.

Week one
Copper was taking his meds and getting into everything, he lived in the barn with me for 24/7 he soon learnt that there were interesting items to get in to he is only consuming between 200 mils and 500 mils every 2 hours not nearly enough for a baby his age, Although he seemed to be getting stronger and brighter everyday his hair was falling out in large patches , we started treatment with Tuffrock Poultice a product kindly sponsored by Steve Hurley and Tuffrock Australia

The past Four weeks At the Sanctuary

Well thanx to all our wonderful supporters these four Brumbies below are now in care and we start the road of domestic life to prepare them for forever homes.
There is much to do and a road to travel for them and us as care takers. Our goal is to send them on to great people after training and recording them through our program.
we will share updates with you as we travel along.
At the moment we are caring for 18 brumbies all at different stages of our Program Please look on our Brumbies Available for Rehoming if you wish to find a Brumby of your own
Once again thankyou one and all
Cheers Lynne
